For example:

The whole number 3 can be represented as a fraction with denominator 1.

Now, suppose we need to write the whole number 3 as a fraction with denominator 2.

That is, we need to find the numerator in this:

Here, to identify the missing numerator, 

we need to find the equivalent fraction of

with denominator 2.		  

 

So, multiply both the numerator and the denominator by 2.
