Relationship Between Area and Perimeter
Perimeter of a rectangle = 2 × (length + width)
Area of a rectangle = length × width
If the area and perimeter of a rectangle are given, we can find its dimensions.
For example: Suppose the area of a rectangle is 12 square centimeters and its perimeter is 14 centimeters.
Let's find the dimensions of the rectangle.
Think of the dimensions that will give the area as 12. And, then find the perimeter for each set of dimensions.
Dimensions | Area | Perimeter |
1 by 12 | 1 × 12 = 12 | 1 + 12 + 1 + 12 = 26 |
2 by 6 | 2 × 6 = 12 | 2 + 6 + 2 + 6 = 16 |
3 by 4 | 3 × 4 = 12 | 3 + 4 + 3 + 4 = 14 |
A rectangle having dimensions as 3 centimeters by 4 centimeters has an area of 12 square centimeters and a perimeter of 14 centimeters.
