Reducing Fractions
To reduce a fraction in lowest terms, first, find the greatest number that divides both the numerator and the denominator. Then, divide both the numerator and the denominator by that number.
For example:
Consider the fraction
4 12
.
The greatest number that divides both 4 and 12 is 4.
Now, divide the numerator and the denominator by 4.
4 ÷ 4 = 1
12 ÷ 4 = 3
So,
4 12
written in lowest term is
1 3
.
