Estimate Sums: Word Problems

Consider this scenario.

A jewelry maker designed 27 necklaces and 41 bracelets for a craft show. 

Let's estimate the number of pieces of jewelry which she made for the show.

For this, we estimate the number of necklaces and bracelets to the nearest tens and then add.

Estimation of number of necklaces made:       30    (27 rounds up to 30)
 

Estimation of number of bracelets made:        40    (41 rounds down to 40)
 

Now, add the estimated numbers together.
 

So, the jewelry maker made about 70 pieces of jewelry for the craft show.
