Words Meaning Example
Force A push or pull acting on an object, causing it to accelerate or deform. He applied a force to the door to open it.
Motion The change in position of an object with respect to time. The car's motion was smooth as it glided down the highway.
Gravity The force that attracts two objects with mass toward each other. The apple fell from the tree due to gravity.
Inertia The tendency of an object to remain at rest or in uniform motion unless acted upon by an external force. The heavy box required a strong push to overcome its inertia.
Friction The force that opposes the relative motion or tendency of such motion of two surfaces in contact. Brakes on a bicycle use friction to stop the wheel from turning.
Velocity The rate of change of an object's position in a particular direction. The car reached a velocity of 60 miles per hour.
Acceleration The rate of change of velocity over time. The rocket experienced rapid acceleration during liftoff.
Mass The amount of matter in an object, typically measured in kilograms or grams. The mass of the stone is 2 kilograms.
Weight The force exerted on an object due to gravity, typically measured in newtons or pounds. The weight of the astronaut on the moon is less than on Earth.
Drag The force that opposes an object's motion through a fluid (like air or water). Aerodynamic design reduces drag on a car.
Tension The force transmitted through a string, rope, or wire when it's pulled tight. The tightrope walker maintains tension in the rope.
Thrust The force produced by a propulsion system, like a jet engine or rocket engine. The rocket's thrust propels it into space.
Equilibrium A state in which the net force on an object is zero, resulting in no change in motion. The book on the table is in equilibrium because it's not moving.
Gravitational Field The region of space around a massive object where another object will experience a gravitational force. Planets create gravitational fields that affect nearby objects.
Momentum The product of an object's mass and velocity, representing the quantity of motion. The collision resulted in a transfer of momentum between the two cars.
Centripetal Force A force that acts on an object moving in a circular path, directed toward the center of the circle. The tension in a rope provides the centripetal force for a swinging pendulum.
Kinetic Energy The energy an object possesses due to its motion. The moving car has kinetic energy.
Potential Energy The energy an object possesses due to its position or state. The raised hammer has potential energy before it falls.
Work The transfer of energy to or from an object by the application of force along a displacement. Lifting a weight requires doing work against gravity.
Collision An event in which two or more objects come in contact with each other, often with force. The collision of two billiard balls caused them to scatter.
